Starting a blog can be a challenging task for a beginner because most people considering this option are trying to figure out where, how, and when to start, what to blog about, and more. If you have the passion and you’ve made the decision to start, it is recommended to start and learn and adapt as you go and grow.

The first step in starting any business is identifying what you want to do with it. The same goes for blogging.  You might have an idea of what kind of content you want to share.

There are many ways to start a blog. The most common way is to write a single blog post, which you can publish on your own site or via social media. You can also create an account on a blogging platform and then just publish the posts from there.

This guide will help you in your blogging journey.

1. Choose your platform

You will need to host your blog on an online platform. Depending on the resources and muscles you have, you can go for the vast free hosting platforms available online, or you can go for the option of self-hosting your blog with your own custom domain name.

Note that most free hosting platforms are limiting in terms of themes, layout, and number of blogs you can post. However, as you grow you can move into better and more efficient platforms and eventually host your blog. We recommend you start with what you can comfortably work with as a beginner.

2. Decide on the type of content

The content is the main body of your blog. It is important to choose a topic you can comfortably research and write articles about. There is a wide variety of content types you can write on, ranging from lifestyle, sports, entertainment, food, professions, and more.

If you notice that the content you chose is not working for you, you can consider changing to a more relatable type of content. Remember always to learn as you grow.

3. Decide on the visual content you’ll use

Visual content mainly involves the type of media used on your blog. These include photos, videos, gifs, carousels, and more. These are very important supporting elements for a blog. They add pomp and color to your blog and help with story narration.

This means much consideration should be made when deciding which images/videos you’ll use on your blog.

You have the option of taking your own images, buying images, or using free stock images. The best option for a blog would normally be taking your own photos. Most readers prefer originality and therefore, they’ll appreciate it if you use your own images. However, if this is not possible, you can always use free stock images available online. Make sure you check on crediting rules before using an image. If the image requires credits, make sure to do so. You don’t want any legal trouble for your blog.

Goals are also motivating factors to keep creating content without giving up even if times are tough. So set a goal and work towards achieving it.
